Geofest
2006,
sponsored by the NYGA, was yet another huge success!
Geofests offer an opportunity for teachers - and other
interested in geographic education - to gather and share
techniques, resources, and their love of geography! This
year's Geofest, held on Manhattan Island at Hunter College,
focused on New York City. The date, October 21st, was
declared "Geofest Day" by Mayor Bloomberg. Over
twenty workshops were presented with titles including,
"Teaching with Pizzazz"; "Mapping the Neighorhood"; "NYS GIS
Clearinghouse: Your One-stop Shop for Everything GIS"; to
name but a few. Our keynote address was given by Bob
Dulli, Deputy to the Chairman of the National Geographic
Society. His talk inspired teachers present to continue
their efforts to include and promote geography in the
classroom. Tim McDonnell ended Geofest with a preview
of the upcoming Erie Canal Summer Institute (see
page
2).
Many thanks to John Agnello, Donna Lulay, and
Donna Merlau for their organizational efforts.
Hunter's Department of Geography and the NYC
Center for Geographical Learning were exceptional hosts!
A special "thank you" goes out to Charles Heatwole,
Phil and Carol Gersmehl, as well as their staff
for pulling off a very successful Geofest. Our appreications
extends to each workshop presenter and vendor who gave of
their time and expertise to share their love of geography.
(Thank you Donna for a record four sessions!) And
finally, big "thanks" goes out to each teacher who came to
Geofest. Wear your T-shirt proudly! Your reviews were
overwhelmingly positive, and this is one reason why we can
declare Geofest
2006
such a success!
Plans are already in the works for Geofest
2007,
which will complete our celebration of the Erie Canal in
the proud city of Little Falls, in the middle of the
scenic Mohawk Valley. The date of this workshop is Saturday
October 13, 2007. Updates on this event can be found on the
Geofest web page. We are always looking for new ideas for
workshops. If you are interested in presenting at
Geofest
2007,
send an email to Ginny
Figura.
