Teacher: Mrs. Ioannone

Students: 36 students from two 5th grade classes

Two 5th grade classes from Charlotte Cross Elementary school sampled the water quality of Eighteenmile Creek in the town of Lockport, NY (in a field across from the town's sewage treatment plant). Sampling took placeon June 9, 1998. The students were assisted by a number of parents and employees from the Delphi Thermal Harrison Radiator plant in Lockport.

Water Quality Index =

Dissolved Oxygen = 10.2 ppm

Dissolved Oxygen Saturation = 110%

Phosphate = 0.1 ppm

Nitrate = 0 ppm

Secchi Depth = 1 foot

Temperature = 20oC

Dissolved Solids = 255 ppm

Suspended Solids = 32 ppm

Total Solids = 287 ppm

pH = 7

Benthic Organisms: isopods

E-coli = 0 to 3/mL

A small stream flowing into Eighteenmile creek ran past the Lockport Sewage Treatment Plant and our sampling site on Eighteenmile Creek. A student group inadvertenly sampled the inflowing stream and found high nitrate and dissolved solid values. The tests were repeated by other students. The levels of these parameters indicate 'poor' water quality for the inflowing stream.

Nitrate = > 5.0 ppm

Dissolved Solids = 730 ppm
