Getting Started

Prior to your School or group Joining Aquanaut Training Program you must first attend the Teacher Training workshop. Here you will learn more about the program, the curricular material , and the kits used for water sampling.

You will then work with the Program Administer to select those parts of the Program that best suit your needs. Your school or group will then be assigned a resource person. The resource person will work with you to prepare for the field sampling and later work with your students to help them interpret their findings.

A day will be selected for the field experience - a number of schools and groups may wish to select the same date, for a simultaneous sampling across the two counties. Any stream or lake may be sampled given safety constraints. A number of pre existing sites will also be available. You may even consider a local pond! The GLC's field station located at the confluence of Lake Erie and the Niagara River is also available for participating groups. It is hoped that a number of volunteers ( parents and representatives from the community) will assist with the field experience.

The kits and supplies needed for the field experience will be housed at the Great Lakes Center and will be assigned to each of the participating schools or groups. This will help reduce chemical waste and cost.

The students findings and interpretations will be reported in the local newspaper, on this web page, and to GREEN. The participating students will receive ribbons or Certificates of Completion. Participating students will be invited to present their results on the Great Lakes Student Information Node and to share their experience at a local Student Congress.
