ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN DURING 2003-2004

SUBJECT DEPARTMENTS SET CRITERIA FOR ASSESSING THE SCHOLARSHIP OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

On February 26, 2003, President Moore endorsed the Statement on Scholarship passed by the College Senate on December 14, 2002. This policy provides parity among the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoT&L) and other forms of scholarship.

The CASTL advisory committee provided the impetus for this change, but it came to fruition through the efforts and determination of the College Senate and the Academic Council. These groups continued to collaborate on the implementation of this policy during 2003 and 2004. The Coordinator of CASTL Campus Programs has attended Department Chair meetings in all three faculties to review the new policy and provide chairs with examples of scholarship in teaching and learning. CASTL advisory committee members have participated in training sessions to provide consultation with departments as they implement their revised policies on scholarship.

'CORE MEMBER' ACTIVITIES

We continue our collaboration with a cluster of ten institutions across the country that are interested in "Organizing to Foster the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning". Representatives from campuses in this cluster met in Utah in July to coordinate their efforts. Dr. Scott Johnson represented Buffalo State College at this meeting. Institutions will meet again in San Diego in March at the CASTL Colloquium. Cheryl Albers, Scott Johnson, and Gloria Eastman will make a presentation at this meeting to share our experiences of integrating SoT&L into the campus culture.

SCHOLARSHIP AND CREATIVITY CONFERENCE

There were two CASTL sponsored presentations at the 2004 Scholarship and Creativity Celebration. Cheryl Albers presented a poster on the benefits of SoT&L to individuals, academic departments, and the institution. Kathleen O' Brien presented the preliminary findings from her fellowship study in applied learning.

WORKSHOPS

On March 24, 2004 over 20 faculty attended a workshop to begin to formulate questions and problems that can be addressed through SoT&L. There was overwhelming support for continuing the momentum of this meeting though regular writing workshops in the fall.
