CASTL/SOTL FELLOWSHIPS

Three new CASTL Fellows join our advisory committee. Fellows undertake research that advances their personal agendas, as well as contributing to the growing knowledge of how classroom activities impact student learning.
  • John Draeger, Assistant Professor of Philosophy Fellowship in the Liberal Arts. Dr. Draeger will document and assess the impact of structured writing assignments on: student's perceptions of instructor expectations; writing anxiety; and quality of final papers.

  • Diane McFarland, Assistant Professor of Business Fellowship for Integrating Inquiry and Action. Dr. McFarland's work will investigate the impact of the integration of community based projects and in class work, on student's mastery of content and development of civic responsibility.

  • Tom Renzi, Coordinator of Tutorial Services in the Academic Skills Center for Supporting the Learning of First Year Students. Dr. Renzi will conduct a study investigating the potential of film for enriching first year student's critical thinking.

PRINT AND ELECTRONIC PUBLICATION

  • Insider Story on CASTL
  • Flyer on results of 2005-2006 Fellowships

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

  • September New Faculty Orientation
  • Our ‘Integrating SOTL into campus programs’ inventory revealed that 15 CASTL Advisory Committee members are involved in 14 programs on campus that have potential linkages with SOTL. Results revealed that there is a great deal of overlap between CASTL Committee members and Service Learning, Accreditation, and Departmental Assessment. Therefore, these areas provide the most fertile areas for integrating SOTL into campus culture.
  • A sub committee of four CASTL advisory committee members worked with the Assessment Officer to identify ways that SOTL could be used to better understand the results of the NSSE/FSSE data. This work will continue with our international colleagues at the September 5-6 meeting in Dublin.
