This study investigated the norm formation process of how members of new groups respond to challenges to the newly developed norm. Groups with prior experience in cooperative tasks approached the new task expecting similar norms, while those with prior competitive norms approached with competitive expectations. Structural challenges were introduced when incentives and norms were manipulated in the new tasks. The researchers found competition brings about motivation while cooperation yields greater motivation.
