A research study to differentiate between the approaches of experts and novices in solving non-routine problems. Subjects were given a task of designing an experiment, and were divided by level of design expertise and domain knowledge. The results showed that when design experts lacked domain knowledge, they typically converted the problem to more familiar form, although that form often led to a non-optimal solution.
