The authors described a strategic-planning process used in the pharmacy department at a university hospital. Process was used to assist the department in planning initiatives concerned with changes in health-care and its educational programs. In addition to brainstorming, process involved: (a) identify factors affecting departments mission, (b) evaluate impact of each factor, (c) identify strategies that respond to each factor, (d) select most attractive strategies to implement, (e) use strategies to create concise statements, (f) implement strategies, and (h) annually re-evaluate strategies. Implications for all departments in the hospital were discussed.
