A research study of expertise and problem-solving strategies highlighted task contingencies and goal-directed strategies. These researchers propose that repeated personal encounters with a similar task will yield a procedural knowledge base of sequences for use when encountering similar tasks in the future. Experts were found to utilize a more strategic, knowledge-based, goal-oriented process, whereas, novices migrated toward a means-end strategy working backward from the goal. Task history or knowledge was found to greatly influence the problem solving process.
