Tripathi, Kailas Nath. (1991). Effect of contingency and timing of reward on intrinsic motivation. Journal of General Psychology, 118 (1) , pp. 97-105.

Type of Resource: Journal Article

This study explored the effects of extrinsic versus intrinsic rewards on performance and participation. The effect of external reward depends on the contingency and timing of the reward. Performance-intrinsic reward increased intrinsic motivation and had greater future effect on subsequent tasks as opposed to task-contingent only and task-contingent with feedback conditions. Feedback conditions involved extrinsic reward, while task-contingent only conditions provided no feedback at all. Both were not as effective as performance-intrinsic reward tasks.
