This study explored the effects of extrinsic versus intrinsic rewards on performance and participation. The effect of external reward depends on the contingency and timing of the reward. Performance-intrinsic reward increased intrinsic motivation and had greater future effect on subsequent tasks as opposed to task-contingent only and task-contingent with feedback conditions. Feedback conditions involved extrinsic reward, while task-contingent only conditions provided no feedback at all. Both were not as effective as performance-intrinsic reward tasks.
