The problem-solving paradigm (or pentagon) was developed to help students gain problem-solving expertise. The paradigm may be used on real life problems, but for purposes of this article, is used with academic problems. In order for students to achieve problem-solving expertise they must have a base of understanding in knowledge, skills, strategy-experience, behavior and resources. When these five areas are sufficently fulfilled, students are capable of attaining problem solving proficiency.
