Lamperes describes The Discovery Program at the Centennial High School in Fort Collins (Colorado) which was in danger of closing and was transformed into an effective alternative school due to the commitment of staff members. The program is taught to incoming students every six weeks. The curriculum teaches students to: 1) be effective group members and use Transactional Analysis communication skills; 2) learn to resolve conflict and manage anger; 3) acquire assertiveness skills; 4) acquire a creative problem-solving model; and 5) develop other valuable skills. Student empowerment became the centerpiece of the program's vision.
