A research study that explores the paradoxes inherent in the enactment of creative leadership in complex interpersonal situations. Twenty-seven public school superintendents were interviewed for 40 minutes about their beliefs and perceptions about specific problematic interpersonal interactions in their professional practice. Twenty-two of the superintendents recounted problematic episodes where they were attempting to innovate or change the way things were done in their district. The inner dialectic leaders experience between taking creative action and taking personal risks is presented in interpretations of the stories told by the superintendents.
