Farris, Hilary H.; Revlin, Russell. (1989). Sensible reasoning in two tasks: Rule discovery and hypothesis evaluation. Memory and Cognition, 17 (2) , pp. 221-232.

A study involving college undergraduates that assessed their hypothesis testing skills. The results of experiments 1 and 2 showed that students consistently employed a disconfirmation strategy when assessing hypotheses but employed a counterfactual strategy when they were also required to generate an hypothesis. Experiment 3 suggested that the selection of hypothesis testing strategy was impacted by both the logical task requirements and the desirability of possible outcomes.
