Study consisting of 3 experiments involving introductory psychology college students which examined the transfer effects of explanations and initial problem types to subsequent reasoning problems. Overall study results indicated the following; 1. In the absence of explanation/training people perform better on thematic logic problems than on abstract logic problems, 2. Training in abstract problem solving yielded a stronger transfer of conditional reasoning to both thematic problem solving, and 3. Having subjects verbalize their reasoning process had no significant impact upon performance.
