2006's Alternative Spring Break Trip saw 11 students travel to Chicago, IL. They spent their week living at Casa Claret with 18 young Hispanic men who were discerning their life's vocation. The students volunteered in the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the Saint Paul's Elementary School, and the Villa Guadalupe Senior Housing Center. In addition to meeting and working with new friends whose ages ranged from 3 to 102 years old, we also got to enjoy the city of Chicago. Students visited the Hancock Tower, the Sears Tower, Millennium Park, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and several shops and restaurants. Everyone had a great time and the gang still gets together every Thursday night for dinner at the Newman Center.
In 2005, 9 BSC students spent their spring break in an exciting new place, making new friends, and helping others. They traveled to the city of Louisville, Kentucky for our annual Alternative Spring Break service trip. The group worked on several projects repairing houses, volunteering at an after school program and seeing some of the sights Louisville had to offer. They stayed at the CROSSROADS house at St. Williams Church in Louisville. They departed from Buffalo early on the morning of March 28th, and returned in the evening on April 2nd. This was an opportunity like no other. It gave them the chance to learn a new culture, and to see how poverty affects people in other parts of the country.
Spring Break 2004 - Baltimore, Maryland
2004's Alternative Spring Break Trip took students to Baltimore MD. The group stayed at SARAH HOUSE, which is an emergency family residence. The people from Baltimore Catholic Charities met with us and told us about the city and how its people suffer from poverty. The following day, we traveled to Washington D.C. to see our Nation’s Capitol and to learn about the national community. Once back in Baltimore, we spent the remaining days making new friends and volunteering at the OUR DAILY BREAD soup kitchen. We continued to live and eat in community with the people at SARAH HOUSE where we also volunteered. In the free time we had we saw the Baltimore inner harbor, relaxed and enjoyed each others company. It was a great way to spend our spring break! We invite anyone who is interested to join us next year.
