Barra MacNeils, with special guest The Cottars
Great Performers Series Artist

Performance(s):
Friday, November 4, 2005: 8:00 p.m.

The Barra MacNeils originate from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. They are one of Canada's most talented and recognized Celtic groups. Steeped in the Cape Breton tradition, siblings Lucy, Kyle, Sheumas and Stewart wow audiences around the world with their captivating vocals, harmonies and extraordinary musicianship.

The Barra MacNeils take their name from the ancestral homeland on the small island of Barra in the outer Hebrides. The four siblings learned Celtic dancing from their mother, and took the music lessons that formed the basis of their renown. Whether it be at church dances or other public outings, the music of the MacNeils, sometimes alone, sometimes together, was certain to be the focal point of the evening.

The Barra MacNeils are firm believers in the traditional values of Celtic culture and family life. This sibling foursome has used the strength drawn from these ideals to make a name for themselves as global ambassadors for the thriving Maritime music community.

Following in the Cape Breton tradition of the Barra MacNeils is opening act The Cottars. Since forming in late 2000, the two brother-and-sister duos have received standing ovations at virtually every show they've performed - from an early 2001 concert for hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, to Boston Symphony Hall with renowned tenor John McDermott in 2002, to their nationally televised performance at Canada's 2003 East Coast Music Awards, where they received the award for Best New Artist, to Tryphony Music Hall in Tokyo, where they shared the stage with Celtic legends Altan. The Boston Globe raves, “one of the hottest acts in the folk world today.”
