Solas

Friday, March 14, 2003: 8:00 p.m.
In seven short years Solas has made a major impact in both America and abroad as an Irish music supergroup whose albums and live shows are among the finest and most exciting experiences in the world.
Led by Seamus Egan, Solas has invigorated the Irish traditional music scene by incorporating non-traditional instruments. The group's five members make use of instruments like guitar, banjo and bouzouki to add a modern spice to their sound, which is heavily rooted in Irish reels, jigs and other folk song forms.
It's rare when an Irish band formed in America can stack up against the best that Ireland itself has to offer. Critics agree that Solas is just such a band. They have "startling instrumental and vocal firepower," said the Los Angeles Times. The Boston Herald went a step further, insisting they're "the best Irish traditional band in the world."
Their critically acclaimed 2002 release "Edge of Silence" reaches beyond traditional Celtic material to interpret tunes by Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Nick Drake and Jesse Colin Young.
