THE PRESIDENT'S HIGHER EDUCATION COMMUNITY SERVICE HONOR ROLL

Make your Community Service Hours Really Count!

The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is an application process honoring Campus Commitment to Civic Engagement across the United States.

Buffalo State students are well known in the community for their volunteer work that directly benefits the quality of life in Western New York.   This volunteer work, including civic engagement, community service, service learning, interning, mentoring, tutoring, etc., has a rich history at Buffalo State College.  Students, faculty and staff contribute literally thousands of hours each academic year.  This win-win situation demonstrates that volunteerism has a direct relationship to strengthening communities and enhancing the reputation of the institution.  Whether students are helping a child with homework, planting a tree in a nearby neighborhood, designing a community newsletter, cleaning up the river, sleeping out to draw attention to special issues, or collecting clothes and food for the needy, they are all participating in worthy educational projects.  At the very least, everyone walks away from a project having learned a lesson about helping others.  It is vital that all service hours be counted in the Honor Roll application.  Last year we were able to capture over 116,000 hours; this year we captured 148,463 hours.  We know there are three or four times that number that haven’t been counted.

The Office of College and Community Partnerships, in conjunction with the Volunteer and Service- Learning Center, prepared the 2009 Honor Roll application.  We need full campus cooperation in order to capture these volunteer hours.  Community Service should be recorded in terms of hours committed per student per semester for the period July 1, to June 30.  All campus organizations, clubs, groups, classes, events and programs that include a component of volunteerism are being asked to provide the following information to our office:

(We do not need student names, however we do need to know if the student is a Vista/AmeriCorps volunteer)

*Number of participating students and number of corresponding service hours

*Number of participating faculty/staff and number of corresponding service hours

*A short description of the project.

Submit a description and the number of volunteer hours to the Office of College and Community Partnerships - Partner@buffalostate.edu or 878-5444.
