To become a teacher, you need to earn a bachelor's or a master's degree in education. Teacher education programs involve coursework and student teaching, where you work in a school alongside a teacher in a classroom. When you study to become a teacher, you specialize in the subject you want to teach. Buffalo State offers more than 70 bachelor's, master's, and postbaccalaureate teacher certification programs.
You also must pass examinations to qualify for your teaching certification. Every state requires teachers to obtain certification before they can teach. In New York State (and many others), you must obtain a master's degree in education (if you don't already have one) within five years of receiving your initial teacher certification.
There are other requirements for teaching in New York State as well. You can get details once you've explored the academic program you're interested in.
