175 (more) Science Experiments to Amuse...:
Grades 4-7-- Similar in format to Walpole's 175 Science Experiments to Amuse and Amaze Your Friends (Random, 1988), this collection covers four areas not in the earlier work: sound, electricity, chemistry, and weather. The book classifies the activities variously as ``experiments,'' ``tricks,'' or ``things to make.'' Basic projects are described briefly, while more complex ones (e.g., burglar alarm, anemometer) include fuller, step-by-step directions. The simple and accurate full-color illustrations make the instructions fairly easy to follow. Appended to some of the experiments is a brief ``how it works'' paragraph, regretfully absent on others. Interesting facts about related subjects are smoothly interspersed. Projects that require adult help are noted, but bold print is used on only some of the warnings.
Teaching Science to Children:
Teaching Science to Children: An Inquiry Approach is a comprehensive, easy-to-use text containing more than 300 science activities for the classroom. The text's focus on the inquiry approach places value on thinking and doing science, and ties the text to the inquiry-oriented National Science Education Standards for science teaching issued by the National Research Council. Each of the inquiry activities contains combined discussions of methods and content. The text helps students overcome science anxiety and shows them how easy it is to teach science using a simple, consistent, three-step approach to each of the science activities (set induction, investigation, and resolution). All activities use simple, easy-to-find materials. Over 250 pieces of line art clearly illustrate the teaching activities
