Registering for a Physics Teachers' Summer Academy course as a Non-degree (visiting) Student
Step 1: You need to complete a Non-degree Student application. This can be downloaded from the Buffalo State College Graduate School website: http://www.buffalostate.edu/graduateschool/howtoapply.xml Note that this application also requires a transcript. This can be either an undergraduate transcript or graduate. Follow the directions on the application. The Non-degree Student application should be submitted to the Graduate Studies office. If you have any questions about this process, contact Mary Lou Hartnett in the Graduate Studies office, hartneml@buffalostate.edu , (716) 878-4058. She knows and understands our program.
Step 2: When your application has been processed (usually a week after it arrives in the Graduate School office) you will be notified. You are then ready to register for the summer academy course through our online registration process, BANNER. To register, go to Buffalo State College web site, www.buffalostate.edu, and enter BANNER. If you have any difficulty with your username and/or password, it is best to call the Buffalo State College Help desk (716) 878-4357. They can walk you through the process. They make the registration process easy, it is best to use the course call number. Course call numbers are a four digit code and may be found by following links at http://buffalostate.edu/courseinformation.xml. Summer 2009 course information is
PHY 510: 1734 (listed in Summer Session B; course runs 7/12/09-7/24/09)
PHY 620: 1351 (listed in Summer Session C; course runs 8/3/09-8/21/09)
PHY 622: 1492 (listed in Summer Session C; course runs 8/3/09-8/21/09)
The Physics Department secretary, Ms. Maggie Swain, swainmm@buffalostate.edu, 716-878-6726 can be very helpful if you are have questions about registration
Step 3: Periodically check your Buffalo State College e-mail. We use e-mail as our main means of communication. Because the BANNER system automatically uses the Buffalo State College e-mail, it is imperative that you check this e-mail weekly. It is best to keep the course instructor informed of your registration status and also give them an alternative (summer) e-mail where you can be reached. If you are carrying a cell phone during the summer academy courses, we'd like to know your number if you are willing to share that as well.
PHY 510: Dr. David Henry, henryd@buffalostate.edu
PHY 620: Dr. Dan MacIsaac, macisadl@buffalostate.edu
PHY 622: Dr. Luanna Gomez, gomezls@buffalostate.edu
Step 4: Before the course officially begins, you will be notified of pre-course assignments and readings. Because the courses are so tightly scheduled, you will be required to complete some readings and reflections ahead of time. Each course will also be using ANGEL, a course management system. Your instructor will notify you via e-mail about getting on and using ANGEL.
Final Note: If you anticipate registering in several of the Buffalo State Physics Teachers' Summer Academy courses please keep in mind that visiting student status is ineligible for Federal student loans and is for ONE SEMESTER ONLY. If you return for another course in a future summer, you will have to re-apply as a visiting student. For future applications, the $50 application fee will be waived (it finances initially vetting your file and data entry), but you will still have to file new transcripts. If you do not want to re-apply every year you might consider Regular Graduate Admission to our MSEd (Physics) cross-certification program 6634, which requires an additional three references letters but is maintained from summer to summer and is good for regular semesters without reapplying every semester. After two years of inactivity, regular program students must reapply in any case.
