NEW FACULTY MEMBER TO JOIN BUFFALO STATE

Dr. Peter Yacobucci will join the Department of Political Science in the fall semester as an assistant professor.  Dr. Yacobucci specializes in public law, public policy, and methodology/statistics.  He holds the Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Arizona, the M.P.P. from Georgetown University (focusing on social and labor policy), and a B.A. from Canisius College.  Dr. Yacobucci is currently an Associate Professor at Walsh College.  He will teach Political Statistics, Contemporary Constitutional Issues, and Introduction to Law in the Fall 2010 semester.

CURRICULUM NEWS

New Undergraduate Minors & Graduate Certificate

The Political Science Department recently won approval from Buffalo State to add two new undergraduate minors to its program offerings:

-International Relations
-Legal Studies
-Advanced (Graduate) Certificate in Public Management approved by the State University of New York and the New York State Education Department in July 2009. *

BA Political Science-Curriculum Changes

Students entering the program beginning in Fall 2010 will be required to take a one-credit hour research skills course and a three-credit hour capstone experience (Senior Seminar or Internship).

**MPA UPDATE**

SUNY System Administration approved Buffalo State's Letter of Intent for the MPA in Public and NonProfit Management (February 2010).  The MPA program proposal has been approved at the Buffalo State level.  The next step is the external review process, which is scheduled to take place during the summer months of 2010.

Buffalo State Student Wins Best NYS Assembly Internship Research Paper Award

Will Schwartz won the prestigious Best Research Paper Award from the NYS Assembly Intern Program for his paper entitled, "The Legislative Process: New York State's Issue of Direct Interstate Shipment of Wine"

Washington, D.C. Semester

Summer 2009-Yolanda Rondon interned with the U.S. Department of Justice:  Office of the Attorney General, General Counsel-Family Services

Local Internships

Political Science majors interned in the local U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, U.S. Congressman Brian Higgins, NYS Assemblyman Mark Schroeder, and other offices of local and state officials.

 

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

 

Political Science Student Hosts Radio Talkshow:

Check out WBNY 91.3 FM on Mondays 6:00-7:00 p.m. for the "Clayton Campaign."  Hosted by Buffalo State political science major Clayton Hoyt with his team of featured commentators (also political science majors)  Davin, Matthew, and Paul.

Student Political Society

Several members of the Student Political Science traveled to Saratoga Springs April 16-17 to attend the 2010 Annual Conference of the New York State Political Science Association.  Four students presented papers. (See, below, Undergraduate Research.)

SUNY Model European Union

A delegation of Buffalo State students traveled to Limerick, Ireland in January 2010 for SUNYMEU 2010.   Buffalo State played Finland and Latvia.  The SUNYMEU Director selected Yolanda Rondon to play the newly-created position (Lisbon Treaty) of President of the European Council.

Mock Trial

The Buffalo State Mock Trial Club, which participates in the American Mock Trial Association competitions,  hosted a Mock Trial scrimmage at Buffalo State in November 2009 for Buffalo State and SUNY Fredonia Mock Trial participants.  

The Mock Trial Club competed in the regional competition in February 2010 at Syracuse University.   Henry Zommerfeld, Junior,  is the Mock Trial Captain.  Mr. Jon Lines is the faculty advisor.

European Union Study Mission

Yolanda Rondon, Timothy Walters, Carla Lanze, and Dr. Laurie Buonanno traveled to Dublin, Ireland; Brussels, Belgium; Luxembourg, and Paris on an EU Study Mission from January  10-20.  The students conducted interviews with EU officials as part of their undergraduate research.
