Buffalo State did a comprehensive report on developing leadership in its departmental chairs that was shared with the campus community in 2002-2003. While the report indicated that a variety of people decide to chair departments for a variety of reasons, several recommendations were made regarding development and support of chairs. Some of the recommendations have been implemented, others are in the process of being implemented through the new Professional Development Office.
One recommendation, a program to orient new department chairs, was initiated in fall 2008. Among other materials, new chairs were provided with:
