"The Psychology Department is designed as an integrated learning experience which allows students to flourish within the field of psychology. It offers an array of dynamic opportunities, such as research involvement and internships that allow students to get involved and gain valuable experience outside the classroom."
The secret to success is to get involved! The following are some of the departmental activities that are available to you:
-
Student Organizations
There are three student organizations. Psychology Club and the Society for Human Resource Management are open to all students. Psi Chi Honorary Society is open to students by invitation only.
-
Independent Research Opportunities
PSY 499 (Independent Study) and PSY 495 (Independent Project) and Honors Thesis in Psychology allow students to develop and conduct projects of their own under the supervision of faculty members.
- Field Internships
PSY 488 Internship Program provides students with an applied experience in the community.
- Teaching Internships
The department provides interested students with a "teaching" internship aimed at helping students acquire teaching skills and more effective ways of organizing, preparing and presenting material. These internships are linked to specific courses. Interested students should speak with faculty for more information.
- Faculty Supervised Research Teams
Under the tutelage of the faculty member several students with similar interests form a team to study a particular research area in a systematic and on-going basis.
- Student Membership on Department Committees
Student involvement is actively encouraged on three major Psychology Department committees. The students attend all meetings and serve as non-voting members. These committees are Curriculum, Graduate Follow Up, and Technology Enhancement. Student members are elected by the Psychology Club.
- Annual Graduate School and Career Informational Meetings
Sponsored by Psi Chi and the Psychology Club for interested upper division majors. At these seminars faculty are invited to present information about careers in Psychology, graduate training in Psychology, the graduate admissions process, and career opportunities in psychology and related fields.
- Annual Student/Faculty Social Hour
Held at the beginning of the academic year for the purpose of welcoming and introducing students and faculty, encouraging students to become active in the department, and kicking off the beginning of the academic year.
- Reception Honoring Graduating Psychology Majors
This function for students and their families is held between the morning and afternoon commencement ceremonies.
