PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT

There are three student organizations in the Psychology Department: Psychology Club, Psi Chi, and the Society for Human Resource Management.

Psychology Club

The Psychology Club is open to all students with an interest in Psychology. It provides a primary vehicle for students to get involved in the social and academic life of the Psychology Department.

Activities of the Club include sponsorship of: outside speakers, a Careers in Psychology seminar, field trips, "get acquainted with faculty members meetings", fundraising activities, research projects, and a year-end picnic. Club members are invited to provide feedback on faculty recruitment and promotion. The club is officially recognized as a student association by the Faculty Student Association of the college.

A faculty adviser is assigned to the club to provide supervision. Drs. Jill Norvilitis and Pamela Schuetze are the advisors for 2008-2009. The Psychology Club website is http://ipa.buffalostate.edu/~psychclub

Psi Chi Honorary Society

This is the national honorary society in Psychology. The chapter is actively involved in the Department and coordinates its activities with the Psychology Club. A major social function of the Department is the annual Psi Chi banquet and initiation of new officers. Psi Chi members are invited to provide feedback on faculty recruitment and promotion. Members of Psi Chi informally sponsor a Psychology Tutoring program. Recruitment to Psi Chi is by invitation and one initiation ceremony for new members is conducted each year.

To be eligible to join Psi Chi, students must have a 3.5 GPA in Psychology and a 3.25 overall. Students must also have completed a minimum of 9 credits in psychology, including PSY 306. For more information about eligibility, see one of the officers or the faculty advisor. A faculty advisor is assigned to Psi Chi. Dr. Jennifer Hunt is the advisor for 2008-2009. The society has its offices in HA 320. Psi Chi also has a national Web site.

Society Human Resource Management (SHRM)

SHRM is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management. Its mission is to serves the needs of HR professionals by providing the most essential and comprehensive resources available. SHRM Student Programs is committee to serving Human Resources (HR) leaders of tomorrow by providing tools necessary to educate and advance the HR profession, and provide career information.

Buffalo State College’s SHRM student chapter is sponsored by the Buffalo Niagara Human Resource Association, a local chapter of SHRM. This student organization complements the courses offered by the Psychology Department in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and helps prepare students for possible careers in Human Resources. Student members can become involved in a variety of activities that allow them to be in contact with HR professionals from the community. Through monthly dinner meetings, invited guest speakers, tours of organizations, and campus conferences, students are provided the opportunity to explore this profession. A number of students have gained internships with local organizations or have sat for the certification exam in HR offered by the national SHRM association.
