I'm having trouble with my computer! What should I do?
First, follow the instructions on the documentation we provided (if you lost it or can't download it for some reason, there are more copies available in the Residence Life Office - in the rack by the door). Read them carefully - and it's easy! You can fix your own computer with only a little effort.
If all else fails, send an email to resnet@buffalostate.edu, or leave a message for the ResNet staff at 878-3358. We'll be happy to make an appointment to meet with you and diagnose your problem. If we determine that your problem lies within our scope of service, you will be asked to bring your computer to the Remediation Center in Perry Hall for repair. However, wait times may be long (depending on demand).
What is ResNet?
ResNet is short for Residence Halls Network. There is a network port available for every student that lives in the Buffalo State College residence halls, giving each resident broadband access to the Internet and to campus resources.
Where are connections available?
Connections are available in every room in all of the Buffalo State College residence halls.
How much does it cost?
There is no charge for this service.
How do I connect to ResNet?
Most users will be able to simply plug their computers into the network socket and instantly connect. If you have trouble connecting to ResNet, contact the Remediation Center at 878-3358 or click here to fill out a service request.
What are the minimum system specifications for a Buffalo State College network connection?
We will connect computers running Windows XP, or Macintosh OS 9.2 or higher. Windows 95, 98, and Windows NT are not officially supported. If you are using a different operating system, you may be able to configure your own network connection, but our staff will not be trained to troubleshoot any problems that may occur in the process.
What do I need to bring with me to campus?
In addition to any software and hardware you’ll need, you should bring with you all information related to your computer, including manuals, installation discs, serial numbers, license codes, and a RJ45 Ethernet Cable (14 Feet or more in length).
What is Ethernet? What is an Ethernet card?
Ethernet is a standard for connecting computers to a Local Area Network (LAN). Through the Buffalo State College LAN, you’ll be able to connect to the Internet. An Ethernet card connects your computer to the LAN from the Buffalo State College campus. Unlike a modem, an Ethernet card connects to the Internet as soon as the computer is turned on.
Most computers sold in the last few years came equipped with an Ethernet card. If you need to purchase one, however, the card must support 10 or 10/100base-T and use an RJ45 connection. All students will also need an Ethernet cable to connect their card to the wall jack.
