What Is RSS?

RSS is an XML-based format used to syndicate electronic content. That is, RSS allows developers to codify content (using XML) and make it available for users to pull to their desktop via an "aggregator" (standalone software that looks a lot like one of those '90s newsgroup readers).

Used most often to disseminate news and Weblogs, RSS allows content producers to create "feeds," which users subscribe to (akin to subscribing to a broadcast e-mail list). Many major publications offer RSS feeds—once you become an RSS subscriber, you will be amazed at the amount of information you can process using feeds.

Better still: Feeds update themselves whenever new content becomes available, you don't have to give out your e-mail address to get feeds (goodbye spam), and you won't receive feeds you haven't subscribed to.

So, You Want In?

Step 1: Get an Aggregator

Aggregators (also called "readers" or "news readers") download and display RSS feeds. Several freeware and commercial aggregators are available. Aggregators often come with pre-loaded feeds, which can be deleted, from sources such as the New York Times, U.S. News and World Report, Yahoo! News, Wired, etc.
