The Olmsted Parks Poetry Project: Exploring the Poetic Nature of Public Spaces

Time: 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Location: 2655 South Park Avenue, Buffalo NY 14218Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens

Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of American Landscape architecture, was brought to Buffalo in 1868 with a vision to design “a city within a park.”  His legacy includes the expansive green necklace of parks and parkways running through the city of Buffalo—a place Olmsted would call the best planned city in America. In celebration of Buffalo State's "Year of the City" initiative, the Rooftop Poetry Club invites you to learn more about the genius of Olmsted and the poetic nature of public spaces. Join us for poetry in the park. Guest speakers will introduce us to the rich history behind the parks, followed by guided workshop activities led by poets Irene Sipos and Lisa Forrest.

Our fifth workshop in the series will take place on Friday, November 2nd, 3:00-4:30 p.m. at South Park. Meet at Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, located at South Park (Admission fee: $7.00 per student/$8.00 general public). Limited carpooling from Buffalo State will be available. Pamela C. Brown, superintendent of Buffalo Public Schools, will present “Buffalo Public Schools: A World-Class Education for Every Child." Brown’s presentation will focus on her core beliefs and theory of action, and strategies for improving the district.

With a wealth of experience in education that spans from the classroom to administrative management, Brown brings to Buffalo a background in bilingual education as a teacher and cross-cultural specialist. She has experience in administration, planning and social policy, and directing second language acquisition programs and has served as classroom teacher, principal, consultant and education reformist. Brown's focus is on the development of innovative curricula, school construction projects, and the establishment of partnerships with universities, businesses and organizations. She is committed to achieving higher test scores and graduation rates for Buffalo students through strong curriculum, community and family support, and the belief that all children can succeed.

This visit with Superintendent Brown is brought to you through a partnership between Year of the City and the School of Education Office of the Dean. Buffalo State is featuring monthly presentations centered on campus initiatives and partnerships in the city of Buffalo, and urban issues that are relevant to the Buffalo community, as part of Year of the City.
