Sommerstein is a M.Ed. graduate of the University at Buffalo and specializes in educating students with significant disabilities. In addition to her teaching duties at Buffalo State, she is a consultant to school districts and agencies on inclusion, curriculum modification, friendship facilitation, and transition for students with developmental disabilities.
Sommerstein is a trained lay advocate and leader in the field of supported inclusion in schools and communities. She is co-founder of National and New York SAFE (Schools Are For Everyone), which advocates inclusion in schools and communities, as well as Hand in Hand, an inclusion advocacy organization for faith communities. She is co-founder and director of the College Based Transition Program at Buffalo State, a non-credit program for students with significant disabilities ages 18-23. Sommerstein is also advisor to the Buffalo State Chapters of Student Council for Exceptional Children and Best Buddies, both organizations that are funded by the United Student Government.
