Burns was awarded the prestigious Buffalo State Presidents Medal for Outstanding Graduate Student upon completion of her graduate program. She joined the Exceptional Education Department as an adjunct in 2005. In addition to her teaching duties at Buffalo State, she is a full time inclusion teacher at Pioneer High School where she was instrumental in the creation of their self-advocacy program for students with disabilities.
