Buffalo State College

The Speech-Language Pathology Department presents the Seventh Annual Thielman Speaker Series: Social Language of Adolescents with Brain Injury with Lyn Turkstra, PhD, CCC-SLP.

Dr. Lyn Turkstra, professor of Communication Disorders at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, is well-known for her research to understand the effects of cognitive impairments on communication ability in adolescents and adults with acquired neurologic disorders. Her current studies focus on the relation of cognitive functions and social recognition to communication behavior, and how this differs between typical adolescents and their peers with traumatic brain injury.

Dr. Turkstra's professional interests include the advancement of evidence-based practice in rehabilitation, and she served as a member of the writing committee for evidence-based practice guidelines in cognitive-communication disorders of the Academy of Neurological Disorders and Sciences. Dr. Turkstra, a graduate of the University at Buffalo's master's program, is a faculty member of the Neuroscience Training Program at Madison and co-author of Optimizing Cognitive Rehabilitation: Effective Instructional Methods.

This annual speaker series honors Paul Thielman who was a great friend of the Buffalo State College Department of Speech-Language Pathology for many years and a member of the Buffalo Chapter of SERTOMA as an active fundraiser for the group.  Upon his untimely death a foundation was established in his name.  Of the many organizations making requests, the family chose to fund two major projects, one being the allocation of money to support this speaker series.
