Graduate Student Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate the theoretical and knowledge-base for treating a variety of communication and swallowing disorders across the life span. Students will demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Normal development of speech, language, hearing, communication and swallowing
  • The nature of speech, language, swallowing, hearing and communication disorders, including their etiologies, characteristics, anatomical/physiological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, and linguistic and cultural correlates
  • Evaluation, treatment, and prevention approaches and methods
  • The relevance of cultural diversity for treating a variety of communication and swallowing disorders

2. Establish and implement effective clinical management programs across a variety of client/patient populations by integrating information from a variety of sources. Students will be able to:

  • Plan and conduct screening and prevention procedures
  • Select and administer appropriate evaluation procedures to determine diagnoses
  • Establish, implement, monitor, and modify intervention plans
  • Refer clients for services as appropriate

3. Demonstrate the ability to understand theoretical concepts and research practices by engaging in research activities that will contribute to our knowledge of communication disorders and sciences. Students will be able to:

  • Critically analyze a body of literature
  • Develop a relevant research question
  • Design a study to answer a research question
  • Complete a study by collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data

4. Demonstrate professional and scientific written and oral skills. Students will:

  • Demonstrate the verbal and written proficiency necessary to effectively convey information related to speech and language abilities/disabilities, communication disorders and sciences, and swallowing
  • Write thoughtful, informative, organized, well-written papers/clinic reports using standard professional writing guidelines
  • Prepare and deliver thoughtful, informative, and well-organized oral presentations

5. Analyze, synthesize, evaluate, and organize information that reflects critical thinking and problem solving. Students will develop the ability to:

  • Obtain and organize information
  • Evaluate the credibility of sources of information and opinions
  • Independently solve problems and offer creative solutions

6. Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary professional issues (e.g., evidence-based practice, ethics, etc.), including certification, licensure, and their application to clinical practice. Students will:

  • Understand and adhere to the professional codes of ethics and scopes of practice for speech-language pathologists
  • Be knowledgeable about the requirements for obtaining and maintaining ASHA certification, New York State licensure, and New York State teacher certification
  • Present a professional demeanor when communicating/collaborating with patients/clients and their families, fellow students, faculty, staff, and other professionals
  • Provide culturally-appropriate services
  • Incorporate the most up-to-date research findings in clinical decision-making
