Crossing the Pond: Belgian Physicists Visit Buffalo State
Research done by Buffalo State physicists has attracted international attention.
Sylvia Smeekens and Lars Giebeler, scientists from the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, traveled to Buffalo State this month to study properties in a material that may allow diesel engines to run cleaner and more efficiently.
The material is a ruthenium compound. Michael DeMarco, chair of physics, and Dermot Coffey, associate professor of physics, have been studying the superconductive properties of ruthenium for several years, using the Mössbauer effect. Their work has been sponsored by two grants from the United States Department of Energy totaling more than $600,000.
The researchers from Leuven are interested in applying the Mössbauer technique to their own compound. The Belgian scientists have a particular problem they want to solve,” said DeMarco. “We’re delighted to have them, and their work will enlarge the scope of our efforts.”
