The Dr. I. Joyce Swartney Science Teacher Development Award

Two annual awards of $800 each to Buffalo State students working toward an undergraduate or graduate science education degree, post bac students working toward certification, a declared major in the Elementary Education and Reading Department, and the above described students who graduated from Buffalo State in the six months prior to the application.

The fund will provide each recipient with:

- One-year membership in the National Science Teachers Association or Science Teachers Association of New York State.

- Funding to attend either a NSTA national or regional conference or the STANYS annual conference.

Criteria and Application Requirements

  • Applicant must have completed at least one student teaching placement.
  • Applicant must also have a 3.0 GPA in his/her science major or science concentration or certification coursework.
  • Personal Statement
  • Two Letters of Recommendation

The Swartney-Harrison "Passion for Teaching Science" Award

One annual award of $1,000 to a to Buffalo State  students working toward an undergraduate or graduate science education degree, post baccalaureate students working toward certification, a declared major in the Elementary Education and Reading Department, and the above described students who graduated from Buffalo  State in   the six months prior to the application.

   Criteria & Application Requirements

  • Applicant must have completed at least one student teaching placement. 
  • Applicant must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher in his/her science major or science concentration or certification coursework.
  • Personal Statement 
  • Two Letters of Recommendation

Angela D. Harrison Science Education Student Teaching Award

This award is given to the student(s) that exhibit excellence in his/her student teaching placement(s). The award recognizes superior effort in creating a positive teaching atmosphere, creating lesson plans, completion of assignments and rapport with students. Students are nominated by their cooperating teacher and student teacher supervisors.
