Buffalo State Stories

Kristen E. Hill

Class of 2006, Music Education

In third grade, Kristen Hill knew she wanted to be a music teacher. So she considered colleges carefully. "I visited Buffalo State twice," she said, "and I really, really liked the faculty." When the director of the choral ensemble gave her an impromptu tour, she felt very welcome.

As a promising student, Hill had her choice of colleges. She selected Buffalo State because she wanted to major in both flute and voice. "The other schools wanted me to pick just one," she said, "and I can't."

A self-described overachiever, Hill is grateful for the scholarships she received at Buffalo State, including the All College Honors Program scholarship, the Burrell Scholarship, and the Kenzie Scholarship.

"It's extremely helpful," said Hill, "because I can focus more on schoolwork than on the economics of going to school."

She met the Kenzie family at a dinner for Kenzie Scholarship recipients. "They were the nicest people I've ever met!" she said.

Hill also enjoys the honors seminars required of All College Honors Program students. "We have really intelligent discussions," Hill said, "and students work very hard to understand." In addition to her other coursework, Hill practices voice and flute for a total of five hours a day. She said, "I'll listen to any kind of music, because each style is a different experience. You're never done learning."
