Strategic Direction 5: Institutional Leadership, Governance, and Responsiveness
Buffalo State will empower leadership at all levels, promote representative and inclusive governance, and provide superior services to the campus community.
Background
In response to Strategic Direction 5, a number of task forces and work groups were established to assist with implementation planning. As a result of these reports and recommendations, a comprehensive plan was developed that included the following initiatives:
- Achieving Success Through Leadership
A year-long cohort-model leadership development program for program managers, department chairs, and faculty governance leaders; includes 360-degree assessment and one-to-one coaching; first cohort started program in January 2005 and graduated in May 2006.
- Emerging College Leaders May 2008
A week-long leadership development program for faculty and professional staff interested in increasing self-awareness and improving leadership skills; includes self-assessment instruments and skill-based workshops; week-long programs tentatively planned for January and May each year.
- Skill-based Workshops
Topical workshops open to faculty and staff and designed to support and enhance other leadership initiatives.
- Student Leadership Programs
Specific leadership initiatives designed and delivered by the Student Life staff targeted to specific student populations—student government leaders, student organization leaders, students in college governance positions, etc. Many of these programs are associated with the LEAD Center.
- Leadership Minor Program
An interdisciplinary leadership minor program is being developed by a joint faculty/student affairs/university college work group. The proposed leadership minor will be submitted through appropriate channels for review beginning with the introductory course in spring 2006. The introductory leadership course was taught in spring and fall 2005 on an experimental basis and will be offered again in spring 2006 (course syllabus, PDF, 35KB).
Leadership Coordinating Council
Because leadership development activities are housed in several administrative units (PDF, 16KB), a Leadership Coordinating Council has been established as an administrative structure to facilitate planning, coordinate activities, and provide a mechanism for information and resource sharing. The Leadership Coordinating Council (LCC) includes representatives from Student Life, University College, Creative Studies, and Strategic Planning.
