The Minnie and Joe Engel Student Humanitarian Award Application (MSWord)
The Minnie and Joe Engel Student Humanitarian Award recognizes a Buffalo State College undergraduate student who has demonstrated personal character through altruism, volunteer service and the giving of oneself to the campus and the larger community. The Engel Humanitarian Award recognizes the full measure of a person’s worth, not just as a scholar, but as someone whose efforts on behalf of others define a quality of character that embodies core values that merit recognition.
Criteria for Selection:
There is no prescribed grade point average for this award. Rather, it is assumed that the recipient will demonstrate the quality of humanitarian service befitting the purpose of this award. Criteria for selection include:
- Undergraduate sophomore, junior or senior enrolled full time (minimum 12 credit hours) at Buffalo State College during the academic year in which the award is made.
- Evidence of exemplary personal character and altruism.
- Evidence of volunteer service on campus and within the larger community while a student at Buffalo State College.

The Luis M. Antonetti Student Humanitarian Award (MS Word)
The Luis M. Antonetti Student Humanitarian Award recognizes a Buffalo State College undergraduate student who has demonstrated personal character through encouragement of non-violent beliefs and actions, volunteer service both on campus and in the community and who demonstrates an ability to reach out to others with broad cultural acceptance. A plaque and award citing the recipient’s distinction is presented at a ceremony held in the spring and the recipient will receive a monetary award.
Criteria for Selection:
- Undergraduate sophomore, junior or senior enrolled full time (minimum 12 credit hours) at Buffalo State College during the academic year in which the award is made.
- Evidence of exemplary personal character, altruism and advocacy for non-violence.
- Evidence of volunteer service on campus and within the larger community while a student at Buffalo State College.
- Evidence of financial need. Financial need will be considered but will not be the determining factor.

President’s Medal for Outstanding Student
One undergraduate student and one graduate student will be awarded the President’s Medal. The President’s Medal is the highest honor awarded to a student by Buffalo State College. This award is given to a student who, through use of his or her natural talents and acquired skills, has demonstrated a commitment toward meeting the goals of higher education as set forth in the college’s mission statement. The recipients will deliver the student address at Commencement. A grade point average of at least 3.5 is required for consideration for this award. Students graduating December 2007, May 2008, or August 2008 will be considered.SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence
The Chancellor’s Award is the highest honor bestowed by SUNY upon a student. This award recognizes model students who have integrated academic excellence with achievement in areas such as athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, entrepreneurship, leadership, and career achievement. Although there is no prescribed grade point average for this award, it is assumed that recipients will have high academic achievement. Award recipients will be recognized at a spring ceremony in Albany and at Commencement. Only students graduating between June 2007 and May 2008 will be considered.
Nominations are being sought for both awards. Students must be nominated by a faculty or staff member. Candidates must have demonstrated the qualities recognized by each award.
Selection Criteria for Both Awards:
Selection criteria are the same for each award; however, to be considered for the President’s Medal a grade point average of 3.5 or higher is required. A student may be nominated for either or both awards.

Academic Performance: Documented via grade point average, honors received, rank in class, research, and other scholarly projects.

Citizenship: Documented membership in a professional organization or community outreach activities.

Leadership/Creativity: Documented local, state, national, or international recognition for excellence (i.e., recipient of major national scholarships/athletic awards and/or recognition by national and international associations and honor societies). For Graduate Students: Documented by activities related to the discipline of graduate degree program or other college service leadership in a professional organization, or community outreach activities related to the field of study.
Nominees must provide a nomination folder that includes the following:

Letter of nomination and two additional letters of support from faculty or staff at Buffalo State College.

A complete resume and biography.

Evidence of scholarly or creative activities (please include copies of these activities).

Reference letters for community involvement.

Additional documentation, written statement, or letters, which provide a more complete picture of how the nominee meets the criteria for the award.

The Mildred Campbell Leadership Award was established by the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, to recognize Buffalo State College students in the area of leadership. The award is offered annually to an undergraduate student based upon the evaluation of the nominee's leadership credentials in accordance with the established criteria. An individual plaque and award citing the recipient’s distinction will be presented at a ceremony on campus in the spring of 2008.
Criteria:
- Undergraduate student.
- Minimum of 24 credit hours completed at Buffalo State College.
- Cumulative grade point average of 2.5.
- Strong record of leadership at Buffalo State College, demonstrated through personal development, organizational leadership, citizenship, and community building.

Who's Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges Application (MSWord)
For nearly seven decades, Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges has assisted in the tradition of furthering the aims of higher education by recognizing and rewarding academic excellence on a national level. Buffalo State is among the 1,900 institutions participating in this national program. As a lifetime benefit, students selected for inclusion in Who's Who are entitled to use a free reference/placement service when seeking post-graduate employment or fellowships. An individual certificate citing the recipient’s distinction will be presented at a ceremony on campus in the spring of 2008.
Who receives recognition?
Appointed by the Vice President of Student Affairs, a selection committee comprised of faculty, staff and student leaders must select Juniors and Seniors who have at least a 3.0 cumulative average and Graduate students with a minimum of 3.5 cumulative average. In addition, all students must be able to demonstrate participation and leadership in extracurricular activities as well as service to Buffalo State College and the community.Completed nomination folders must be received in the Office of the Associate Vice President and Dean Of Students. Phillip Santa Maria, Ph.D., served for twenty-five years as associate vice president and dean of students at Buffalo State College. A much-loved member of the college community, Dr. Santa Maria’s concern for students, his commitment to the campus and his devotion to service in the community were evident in all his activities. The Phillip Santa Maria Memorial Award was created in his honor to inspire others to pursue the same selfless qualities that characterized Dr. Santa Maria’s personal and professional life.
The Phillip Santa Maria Memorial Award recognizes a Buffalo State College undergraduate student who has demonstrated a well-rounded character, exhibiting not only scholastic achievement but also active participation in campus life at Buffalo State College and in the Western New York community and a desire to improve the world. A plaque and award citing the recipient’s distinction is presented at a ceremony held in the spring and the recipient will receive a monetary award.
Criteria for Selection:
- Undergraduate junior or senior enrolled full time (minimum 12 credit hours) at Buffalo State College during the academic year in which the award is made.
- GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Evidence of high integrity.
- Evidence of volunteer service on campus and within the larger community while a student at Buffalo State College.

Phil Santa Maria Award for Student Leadership in Equity and Campus Diversity (PDF, 24KB)
For 25 years, Dr. Phillip Santa Maria served as Dean of Students at Buffalo State College. During his tenure, he was recognized both on campus and throughout the community for his leadership on a variety of diversity and social justice issues. The Phil Santa Maria Award for Student Leadership in Equity and Campus Diversity has been established in his honor and will be given annually to recognize students who exemplify Dr. Santa Maria’s commitment to service, social justice, and diversity.
Students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit nominations of student leaders who exemplify his commitment to service, social justice, and diversity through promoting respect for diversity and individual differences in their activities, projects, discussions, or their leadership with student organizations and groups for this purpose.
Eligibility:
Undergraduate and graduate students at Buffalo State College
Criteria:
1. The recipients must have demonstrated leadership in the promotion of respect for diversity and individual differences through their roles in organizing discussions, curricular experiences, out of classroom experiences, special projects or programming that goes beyond that usually expected of a student.
2. Recipients must demonstrate leadership in encouraging their peers to embrace diversity and to appreciate the benefits of diversity on campus, in the community, and in their everyday lives.
3. Recipients must have created or played a significant leadership role in initiatives or programs that promote access, equity, or social justice in relation to gender, race, ethnicity, cultural and linguistic difference, marital or veteran status, age, disability, sexuality, religious belief, national origin or other aspects of diversity within the college or the broader community.
Please use the attached form to nominate a student or students who meet the criteria for the recognition award. Submit the nomination form to Dr. Dolores E. Battle, Co-Chair, President's Council on Equity and Campus Diversity, CLEV 415 no later than March 21, 2008.
