Education in Chile: Presentation by Visiting Delegation from Chile

Time: 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Location: Bacon Hall 115

Please join the School of Education Professional Development Schools Consortium (PDS) for a special presentation by visitors from our partner university in Santiago, Chile on Tuesday, February 4 at 12:15 pm until 1:30 pm in Bacon Hall 115.

Universidad Mayor director of special education, Andrea Barnier, and special education teacher candidate, Danella Hernandez, will present on the structure of education in Chile, including information about early intervention programs.

This Year of the Teacher event is free and open to the public.

Chile 2014: Study Abroad for Educators - Information Session

Time: 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Location: Bacon Hall 116A

The Elementary Education & Reading Department is accepting applications for its third International PDS study abroad program in Santiago, Chile.  This  three-week  trip, held June  7-29, 2014, is  an  opportunity  for  students to  study  Chilean  history  and  culture  through  an  educational lens  in  the  capital  city  of  Santiago  with  Drs.  Pixita  del  Prado Hill  (Elementary Education and Reading)  and  Eric  “Luke”  Krieg  (Sociology).

Eligibility & Details:

  • Open to graduate and undergraduate students
  • Students will earn 3 credits
  • Funding opportunities are available
  • No prior Spanish speaking skills are necessary
  • You must be 18 years of age or older
  • You must be in good academic standing

Students are expected to:

  • Attend a series of meetings during the Spring 2014 semester to prepare for travel
  • Collaborate to prepare instructional materials for our partner school
  • Live with host families while in Chile
  • Complete a reflective journal while in Chile
  • Participate in all planned activities and class meetings prior to departure and while in Chile

Activities include:

  • A Spanish immersion course at a Spanish language school in Santiago
  • Partnership activities with teacher candidates and faculty at Universidad Mayor
  • A service project at our partner school, Benjamin Vicuña Mackenna, School 25
  • Excursions to the Pacific Ocean, Andes Mountains, and places in and around the city of Santiago (museums, artisan communities,  and historic sites)


Attend the Information Session on February 4 at 4:00 pm in Bacon 116A. Topics to be discussed include expectations and costs, as well as a question and answer period.

Study Abroad for Educators: Germany 2014 Information Session

Time: 4:00 p.m.

Location: Caudell Hall 115

The School of Education is accepting applications for its inaugural Germany for Educators program. This 3-week international initiative is an opportunity for students to study and observe German schools, culture, and history in and near Stuttgart, Germany with program facilitators, Tamara Horstman-Riphahn and John Carlino.

Eligibility & Details:

  • Travel July 2-22, 2014 (approximate dates)
  • Non-credit-bearing program
  • Open to all currently enrolled teacher education graduate and undergraduate students
  • Funding opportunities may be available
  • No German language skills necessary
  • Must be in good academic standing

Student Expectations:

  • Attend a series of meetings during the spring 2014 semester to prepare for travel
  • Live with host families while in Germany
  • Complete a reflective journal while in Germany
  • Participate in all planned activities and class meetings prior to departure and while in Germany
  • Meet all application, materials, and payment requirements and deadlines

Activities Include:

  • Partnership activities with teachers and faculty near Stuttgart, Germany
  • Visits to German schools and universities
  • Excursions to area communities and cultural/historical sites
  • Examinations of German education, history, and culture
