Beyond the Classroom

The best way to learn is by doing

Placing student-artists in the center of the creative process includes the theater, the television studio and, most importantly, the world we live in. Because theater-trained individuals are in high demand in the workplace and uniquely prepared to make positive impact in a variety of industries, we place great value on curricular experiences beyond the classroom.   These applied learning experiences include but are not limited to professional internships, community outreach projects, involvement with arts-related organizations, teaching at local elementary and high schools and on-the-job experiences.

A primary experience available to theater students is Casting Hall Productions, a hands-on, student-run theater production company.   The moment a student is accepted into the theater department they are seen as professional collaborators with the department’s faculty-this mirrors the professional theater model.

Alumni of the Theater Department maintain active associations with their alma mater and fellow classmates. The Theater Department Alumni Forum is an online space for Buffalo State students to share stories, describe work experiences, and stay connected.

We believe community engagement is essential to the development of the young artist.  To that end, students will be directly involved in our annual outreach efforts (The Anne Frank Project, Holiday Giving Party, Olmsted World Arts Fair) as well as several other smaller projects connected to each year’s curriculum and main stage production season.
