ACADEMIC THEME 2008-2010

INCONVENIENT TRUTHS AND THE 2008 ELECTION:
BUFFALO STATE INQUIRES AND ACTS
A TOWN HALL DISCUSSION SERIES

Young people have engaged in the political process in record numbers during the 2008 presidential race. Regardless of party affiliation, young adults are showing their commitment to the future of this nation and the planet. This provides a significant opportunity for Buffalo State to fulfill its mission to empower a diverse population of students to succeed as citizens of a challenging world.  University College at Buffalo State is proud to co-sponsor a series of interactive town hall discussion around issues related to the upcoming presidential election. Using our Academic theme of Inconvenient Truths, we invite our campus community to explore specific dimensions of issues affecting the presidential race and the potential impact of particular policy platforms advanced by the candidates on these issues.

The town hall meetings will be structured as interactive conversations for the campus community. Each meeting will feature a facilitator/discussant, three student presentations (these could be individuals or groups of students) and one faculty presentation. After which the floor would be open for conversation. We invite faculty and students to submit original pieces rooted in the context of current course work to be considered for presentation at these discussions. The student presenters at each session will receive a 100 dollar credit toward next semester’s textbooks at the Barnes and Noble bookstore on campus. Students may submit individually or as part of groups whether the submission is a group project done in class or developed through a student organization. Faculty who either teach the course for which the project was completed or serve as advisor to the group will receive 250 dollars for travel or supplies. We encourage students, faculty, and staff to submit original works that could be presented at the following discussions:
