UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
MISSION, VISION, and CORE VALUES STATEMENT
Mission:
University College programs teach skills and knowledge that transcend specific majors, enrich the learning experience of students in any major, further the learning abilities of all students, and facilitate successful transitions from high school to college learning and from general studies to majors. University College serves Buffalo State students by administering programs and providing services that challenge students to think in new ways, master new knowledge, develop new skills, make intentional and appropriate personal and academic choices, and develop meaningful relationships with faculty, staff and fellow students. University College serves Buffalo State faculty and staff by aiding them in their pursuit of excellence in pedagogy, advisement, and student services.
Vision:
University College at Buffalo State will be known as a leader on campus and throughout higher education for:
-
rigorous and creative interdisciplinary teaching and learning
-
the academic successes of Buffalo State first-year, second-year, undeclared, non-matriculated, at-risk, and honors students
-
exceptional collegiality and service
Core Values:
- The mission of University College is a specific manifestation of the mission of Buffalo State.
- The first year of college is central to the achievement of Buffalo State’s mission and creates the foundation on which undergraduate education is built.
- University College values assessment as it provides the evidence that we have met our goals and informs the directions of our programs.
- The organizational operations of University College should reflect a purposeful, comprehensive, and integrated approach to first-year learning, interdisciplinary academic experiences, and provision of student services.
- University College serves all students based on our understanding of best practices in higher education, the policies of Buffalo State, and requirements of academic departments.
- A Buffalo State education and a liberal arts education require that students experience diverse ideas, world views, peoples, and academic disciplines. Proactive advisement, creative pedagogies, and learning assistance do not compromise academic rigor, nor do they absolve students from the responsibility for their own academic success.
- The professionals and faculty in University College should be active participants in scholarly conversations about teaching, learning, and student services.
