Conversation Starters

Check out these reviews on various media that features tobacco and stimulates conversation.
These reviews are brought to you by a 2012 Weigel Peer Educator.

Thank you for Smoking (1 hour, 30 minutes) - This movie depicts the life of a Big Tobacco lobbyist who takes great pride in his job to portray tobacco and cigarettes in a positive light. The protagonist is both likable and distasteful, and successfully illustrates how money, power, and self-interest can motivate good people to make bad decisions. The movie also makes one reflect on the flexibility of the morals and question the motives anyone in power. Good movie, however strong language and some graphic sex scenes may make it uncomfortable viewing for the classroom or movie night with grandma.

Stuff You Should Know: Nicotine  (30minutes)-  This is an episode of a free podcast you can download hosted by Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant, who explore how nicotine affects the body and why tobacco products are so addictive. The hosts are smart but personable and the tone of the podcast is light and entertaining but still educational. For those who are more science minded, this is an interesting listen. I think it would be a great way to introduce the topic of addiction or class discussion on tobacco use, or if you just like learning new stuff in a stress-free way, why not give it a listen?

Golden Holocaust: Origins of the Cigarette Catastrophe and the Case for Abolition- In this book, historian Robert Proctor reveals little-known secrets of the cigarette, starting with the ingredient list: antifreeze, cocoa shells, liquorice and over 100 other additives. Mr. Proctor takes his data from Tobacco Archives that are housed at the University of California San Francisco Library--information gathered and produced by tobacco companies themselves! For a quick but informative run-down, you can listen to his conversation on NPR's Science Friday from September 7th, 2012. Another great way to start a conversation on tobacco use and ways to change national smoking habits.

BBC's We Love Cigarettes (40 minutes) - A documentary on why smoking is so addictive and a look at global smoking trends over the last century. This can be found in its entirety on youtube. It does a very good job showing how tobacco usage in the west may be falling, but cigarette companies are still raking in profits due to the enormous upswing in usage in developing nations. I thought the documentary did an interesting job juxtaposing those who enjoy smoking with the reality of its harmful effects.
