COLLEGE WRITING PROGRAM

PEACE ESSAY CONTEST

This year we do not have one overall reading, because of the general nature of the theme: “Community, Diversity, and Peace: Integrating Inquiry and Action.”  Instead there are several links to United Nations sites which will give students the chance to start getting acquainted with this enormous institution with its many branches and projects. Note also a link to the site of the Nobel Prizes, inspiring to learn about, and especially the Peace Prizes and their recipients.

The topic of each link is not clear, so this is what each leads to:

1.  “End Poverty 2015: Make It Happen” is a newsletter about progress toward the goals of the Millennium Development Project, described in the “background” section; press the left end of the gray bar under the heading picture.

2.  Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s homepage.

3.  Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro’s biography and about the position she holds.

4.  Ban Ki-moon’s priorities as Secretary-General.

5.  The Nobel Prize site.

Suggestions for past readings to use are included in the “Thoughts About the Conference Theme” page.
